Caldwell Lead Sled DFT 2 Rifle Shooting Rest
The Caldwell Lead Sled DFT 2 Rifle Shooting Rest is basically one of Caldwell’s most stable and adjustable recoil-reducing bench systems, built for people who want to remove as much movement and recoil as possible when zeroing rifles or testing ammo. It uses a dual-frame steel design that can slide to fit different rifle lengths (including AR-style setups with longer magazines), and a heavy base that helps keep everything locked down on the bench. The big feature is the large weight tray system, which can hold up to around 100 lb of lead shot, massively reducing felt recoil and helping keep the rifle planted shot after shot. It also has fingertip elevation adjustment and smooth length tuning, so you can fine-tune your point of aim without constantly lifting or repositioning the firearm. At roughly 24 lb unloaded, it’s very much a fixed bench tool rather than something portable, but it’s known for making sight-in sessions easier, calmer, and more consistent.

Dual frame alignment system adjusts 22 to fit rifles and shotguns of virtually any size
Extremely fine windage and elevation adjustments with finger tip control
Improved weight dispersion through our unique baffle and tray system
Stay in optimal shooting position by making elevation corrections using the rear elevation collar
Prevent stock shift between shots with the stock-stabilizer rear bag
Multi-surface rear foot provides correct contact on all shooting surfaces
1. What is the Lead Sled DFT 2 used for?
It’s used for bench shooting, especially zeroing scopes, sighting in rifles, and testing ammunition accuracy.
2. Does it reduce recoil?
Yes, the weight tray system and heavy frame significantly reduce felt recoil during shooting.
3. Does it come with weights?
It comes with an empty weight bag, but you must fill it with sand or lead shot yourself.
4. How much weight can it hold?
Up to about 100 lb of lead shot, depending on how it’s configured.
5. How heavy is the rest itself?
Around 24 lb without added weights, giving it a very stable base.
6. Can it fit different rifle lengths?
Yes, it has adjustable frame length (about 16–18 inches of adjustment) to fit many rifles and shotguns.
7. Does it work with AR-style rifles?
Yes, the sliding frame design allows clearance for AR magazines and similar setups.
8. Is it good for precision shooting?
Yes, it’s widely used for consistent benchrest-style grouping and zeroing.
9. Is it portable?
Not really—it’s heavy and designed to stay on a shooting bench.
10. What’s the main downside?
It’s bulky, needs additional weight to reach full performance, and is overkill for casual range sessions.
