DESCRIPTION

MTC Optics King Cobra 6-24 x 50 F1 – a telescopic sight that will appeal to shooters who favour higher-powered First Focal Plane (FFP) scopes, where the
relationship between target and crosshair size remains constant throughout the scope’s entire magnification range.

The King Cobra comes well-appointed. It offers click-stop adjustments in MILs (1 click =1cm at 100m), actuated via lockable, finger-adjustable elevation and windage turrets. Its features MTC’s SCB2 multi-Aimpoint reticle, providing for numerous aiming points to counter trajectory and windage deviation – and its central crosshair can be red illuminated to one of six brightness levels to suit any lighting scenario. To maximise light transmission and maintain a bright sight picture, the King Cobra’s 30mm tube has been matched to a 50mm objective lens that’s been specially coated.

A pin-sharp sight picture is guaranteed courtesy of a fast-focus eyepiece and a side adjuster to dial-out parallax error; from infinity down to 15 yards. The parallax adjustment also doubles as a handy range-finder when used in conjunction with the King Cobra’s highest magnification settings.

Besides protecting the scope’s lenses, the supplied magnetic flip-up covers also sport an integral magnifier in the ocular cap to assist with turret scale reading.

Please note that our latest order of these scopes may not contain fip-up covers. If your scope arrives without them please contact MTC direct and they will ship the flip-up covers direct to you once they have received stock of them.

Novice niggles.
As a first time user of FFP, no use to me below 10 mag reticle cannot be easily seen. 10x24 would have been a more accurate description. Visually the looks are quality, and the ability to remove turrets, to easily attach range tape is a nice touch. The incap magnifier although not a must is a useful touch. Being honest I should have known more about this type of scope before buying, then I might have chosen different for the money!,

Average at best
Having two MTC Vipers, a Mamba and a Mamba lite in the cabinet, I thought the King Cobra was a good bet for my first FFP.

Was I blown away? Nope. Did it live up to my expectations of the MTC brand? Nope. Would I part with it? Yes.

It's an 'OK' scope, but nothing special.

SCB2 reticle is only just useable at 10x. Below that it's way too thin to use on paper, let alone in the field, and even then 12x is more realistic if there's not a contrasting background, so not great for FOV when hunting between 20-40m (could have sworn airgun suitability was MTC's mantra before Daystate bought them).

It's also fussier on eye position than previous MTC scopes at 12-20x. Plus, the bulky parallax wheel doesn't like insert-left mags, unless you mount high to clear it. So my Daystate Mk4, which did offer a great cheek weld, now doesn't with this scope mounted - compounding the fussiness.

Illumination is OK. I won't be switching it on to squeeze an extra 30 minutes out of shoot. More like, when I have to use it, that's time to pack up.

Turrets had some of waxy goo oozing out of them when new. Clicks are OK, in a 'Meh' kind of way.

The flip-up covers do the job, but not in the same way that the old MTC metal ones did. These add a cheapness to the handling of the scope. I doubt they will take much punishment. I say 'they', but I've already ditched the ridiculous rear window cover (or monocle, whatever it's intended to be).

I appreciate I've totally shot myself in the foot if I'd hoped to PX this scope against something better, but hey, this is the review I wish had been around to read when I was choosing a new scope.

It's not terrible, but it's not great. It costs enough to not want to lose a load of money on it, but it will never top my favourite rifle and will likely sit on a 30m setup until sold as a package.

What a shame, MTC.
