The Ultimate Guide: How to Correctly Mount, Align, and Zero a Thermal Front Clip-On

However, the number one anxiety keeping shooters from pulling the trigger on a clip-on is always the same: "Will it actually hold its zero, or am I going to miss a fox because it’s misaligned?"

Let’s dispel the myth right now. Modern front clip-ons do not shift your point of impact, if you setup and calibrate them correctly. Unlike a traditional scope where you dial physical turrets, zeroing a front clip-on is a simple software configuration.

Here is our step-by-step technical guide to perfectly mounting, aligning, and zeroing your thermal clip-on for rock-solid precision in the dark.

Step 1: Precision Mounting (The Foundation)

A flawless digital zero means nothing if your device physically slips under the recoil of a .223 or .243. Your zero is entirely dependent on a high-quality collar system, such as a Rusan or Smart Clip adapter.

  1. Measure with Calipers: Never guess your scope size based on the manufacturer’s model name. A "56mm scope" refers to the glass lens size, but the outer metal casing (the objective bell) might measure 62mm or 64mm. Use a digital caliper to get the exact outside diameter to the nearest millimeter.
  2. Degrease the Surface: Before slipping the adapter onto your day scope, wipe down the outer objective bell and the inside of the adapter rubber lining with a bit of isopropyl alcohol. Removing oil, grease, or dirt prevents the unit from rotating or sliding forward during recoil.
  3. Set the Clamp Tension: Slip the adapter on and close the locking lever. It should require firm pressure to close, but you shouldn't have to force it. If it moves when you gently twist the thermal unit, open the lever, tighten the adapter's tension screw by a fraction of a turn, and lock it again.

You cannot zero a thermal optic using a standard paper target or a sharpie drawing, the camera sensor only sees heat differentials, meaning a flat paper bullseye will look completely blank.

● The Tin Foil Cross: Cut a small, 2-inch square of household aluminum foil and tape it to a cardboard box. Tilt the box slightly backward (about 5 to 10 degrees) so the foil reflects the cold temperature of the open sky. On "White Hot" mode, the foil will stand out as a stark, crisp, pitch-black square.

● The Disposable Handwarmer: Activate a standard charcoal handwarmer pouch and pin it to the center of your target board. This provides a glowing, highly visible heat signature out to 100 yards.

 

Step 3: Mechanical "Eyeball" Alignment

Before you load a round or look at the software menu, you need to ensure the clip-on is physically sitting straight on your rifle.

Mount the clip-on to your day scope, get behind the rifle, and look through the glass. Set your day scope’s magnification to its lowest setting (usually 1x to 3x).

Here is the most critical concept to understand: Your day scope is already zeroed. Do not touch your day scope's windage or elevation turrets. When you "zero" a front clip-on, you are simply using the thermal's software to move its internal screen image until it aligns perfectly with where your day scope's physical crosshairs are already pointing.

1.Set up at the range: 50 or 100 yards.

Secure your rifle in a rock-solid shooting rest, bipod, or lead sled. Set your day scope magnification to a low, native power so you can see the entire thermal interface clearly.

2.Fire your baseline shot: 1 to 3 rounds.

Aim your day scope's physical reticle dead-center at your thermal target and fire a shot. Note exactly where the bullet impacted relative to your crosshairs.

3.Activate the Zeroing Menu:
